Looking for a Principal Engineer for Enterprise Data Platform Team to help us shape the future of Tableau Data management. Our team supports all data analytics across Tableau by supporting the Data Lake (Snowflake), building the next generation Data Platform, and developing the Self Service Data Portal.

 

Tableau’s Enterprise Data Platform (EDP) team is responsible for engineering and operating Tableau’s best in class data platform supporting 5,000+ global employees. EDP’s Technology team engineers and operates our cloud data lake on Snowflake and several platform-as-a-service (PaaS) tools used by data engineers, scientists, analytics engineers and anyone working with data flows at Tableau. The team develops mainly in Python, owns the full DevOps lifecycle for our systems deployed on Airflow, Kubernetes, and AWS.

 

Job Description:

The Principal Software Engineer will drive the design for all components, services, and technologies across the data platform (Data Lake, Data Platform, and Data Portal). This role will lead the team in designing the solutions that allow Tableau users to consume data efficiently in the data lake, collect and curate data in the data platform, and manage their data with the data portal. This role will be the Technical Leader and expected to mentor the developers to expand their skills and capabilities, work with the developers to create designs and implement the solutions, and engage with EDPA Leadership to develop the technical roadmap and technologies. The current set of technologies include cloud data lakes (Snowflake), design as code, microservice API architecture, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS Cloud Services, Typescript, Python 3, and React.

Your Impact:

 

Success in this role will be measured by the rollout and adoption of our data platform at Tableau, performance of EDP’s systems including usage tracking and uptime, and performing the required role tasks including:

  • Understand and support the current architecture.

  • Expand the platforms to support a larger community.

  • Update and add features to the Data Platform to support data retention, data security, data governance, and data contracts.

  • Develop a Microservice API with service discovery to support CLI, CI/CD, and Portal requests with security and trust always in mind.

  • Develop a Data Portal that will allow the user community to securely share their data domains, manage their pipelines, run audits, and handle security requests such as GDPR, PII, and SOX

  • Mentor team members and help them grow their own careers.

  • Discovering, Understanding, Leveraging, and Exposing new technologies and designs that will benefit the Data Platform

 

Proficient Experience

  • Strong computer science fundamentals.

  • Python 3 experience writing multi functional applications

  • Modular and Service based Architectural Design

  • Demonstrated experience in large-scale Kubernetes systems, including how to sufficiently scale very large services in Kubernetes.

  • AWS Cloud Experience especially around Networking, VPCs, IAM Role Management, and Security in the AWS Ecosystem

  • Solid understanding of W3C standards, ES6 standards and web technologies, such as JavaScript, CSS & HTML5.

  • Demonstrated strong design and UX sensibilities

  • Experience in effectively advising senior stakeholders on the technical scope and feasibility of complex product requirements.

  • Experience in automated testing, including unit and functional testing.

  • Understanding of the Agile process and continuous integration.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

  • Can work with a cross-functional team to design, prototype, and deliver high-quality products.

 

Desired Skills

Hands-on experience with Airflow

Experience with modern JavaScript libraries and tools.

Experience working closely with cross-functional teams across geographical locations.

Experience with relational databases, SQL, and Cloud or MPP Database Architectures

Experience with Terraform and/or Helm deployments

Git CI/CD Designs including Vulnerability Scanning

Experience with enterprise multi-tenant software.
