Your Role and Responsibilities
IBM Watson Discovery is seeking a Software Engineer with exposure to Information Retrieval techniques to join the Search Software Engineering team. Watson Discovery is a next generation AI-enhanced insight engine. The Search team is focused on the enhanced query functionality that is a critical component of Watson Discovery. In this role, you will help expand and improve the search capabilities of Watson, working with IBM research and collaborating with our product management and design team in order to build innovative solutions.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for software development with experience using functional programming languages (preferably java/SCALA) following agile methodologies in a continuous delivery environment. For this role you should have a passion for building high-quality, innovative, and fully performing software in compliance with coding standards and technical design. As part of your responsibilities, you will participate in requirements gathering, sprint planning, design and technical review to support the overall achievement of business objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in the design and implementation of sophisticated software systems in Java using functional programming techniques
  • Participate in software design/architecture and code reviews. Reviews include other Software Engineers and are held to ensure a high level of software quality and to share knowledge with team members.
  • Participate in, and adhere to, professional software engineering practices using such tools and methodologies as Agile Software Development, Test Driven Development, Continuous Integration, Source Code Management (git) in GitHub
  • Participate in the planning, creation and execution of automated test cases and load/performance testing
  • Address production issues in a timely manner. This includes root cause analysis and working with manager and team members to resolve the problem.
  • Fair understanding of machine learning, NLP.
  • Good Understanding of Information Retrieval and Search systems
  • Maintain a high level of proficiency with Computer Science/Software Engineering knowledge and contribute to the technical skills growth of other team members
  • Work well independently and as part of a team
  • Work as an Agile scrum team member
  • Engage in 24/7 support periodically to assist in critical production issues to maintain the system

Location & Travel: Once IBMers are no longer working from home due to COVID-19 this will be an office-based position in the greater Boston, MA, Austin, TX or San Jose, CA (IBM Silicon Valley Labs). Periodic travel may be required for team meetings or industry conferences.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 3+ years’ experience software development using functional programming (Preferably Java)
  • Proficiency in object oriented development using Java/Scala/Python.
  • Proficiency with unit testing
  • Proficiency with Version Control
  • Cloud / Microservices development experience
  • Experience with Elasticsearch or other similar search engine (Solr,Lucene)

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Passion for Computer Science and Programming
  • Strong understanding of data structures and algorithms
  • Knowledge of functional programing languages and techniques
  • Knowledge of object-oriented programming languages and techniques
  • Solid understanding of concurrency and concurrent programming techniques
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, or comparable work experience
  • Experience with plugin development in a search system (like Elasticsearch or Solr)
  • Experience in AI related technology, ML/NLP
